MIAMI, FL — Two VITAS Healthcare marketing campaigns—one offering free grief support to healthcare professionals and the public during COVID-19 and another promoting the value of honest physician-patient conversations about end-of-life care—have earned 2021 Aspect Awards from Aging Media for creativity, style and impact, as well as quality, goals and results.

Selected from among 40 national entries by leading healthcare providers and vendors, the two award-winning VITAS campaigns addressed key issues: the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the physical and mental health of front-line healthcare workers, and the hospice profession’s embrace of the value of advance care planning and goals-of-care conversations between physicians and their patients/families.

“The VITAS corporate marketing team is proud to be recognized for its communication efforts during one of the most challenging times in recent U.S. healthcare history,” said Drew Landmeier, senior vice president and chief marketing officer for VITAS, the nation’s leading provider of end-of-life care. “Because of our deep expertise and ability to adapt to an ever-changing healthcare environment, VITAS continues to lead the nation in hospice care, grief support and these important end-of-life discussions.”

The winning VITAS campaigns included:

  • National Grief Helpline, hosted in the days leading up to Memorial Day 2020, deployed nearly 50 trained VITAS grief specialists to provide free phone support to consumers and healthcare workers struggling with the stresses of caring and coping during the pandemic. The helpline received an award for COVID-19 messaging and communications.
  • National Healthcare Decisions Day initiative, a multi-media event award winner, leveraged a VITAS webinar for physicians, thought leadership placements by VITAS experts, social media campaigns, PDF publication of a free “Thinking About Hospice” guide for consumers, and release of a video guide for physicians on how to have difficult-but-necessary conversations with patients and families about their wishes and values for end-of-life care. Among the campaign-associated metrics vs. benchmark: 35% increase in webinar attendance, 69% increase in landing page sessions and 83% increase in downloads of the consumer hospice guide.

For its first-ever awards program, Aging Media Network solicited entries featuring top marketing and advertising campaigns from care providers and vendors specializing in home health and home care, hospice and palliative care, senior housing/living and skilled nursing.
