Commitment: The First Pillar of the VITAS Difference

Watch the VITAS Difference Commitment video to see how VITAS employees turn commitment into tangible actions as they work every day.

Commitment is a foundational pillar of the VITAS Difference, a set of qualities, behaviors, and expectations that define how VITAS employees interact and work together to provide compassionate hospice care.

“Commitment means doing what you say you’re going to do when you say you’re going to do it.”-Raynell Aponte, VITAS executive assistant

Employees who exhibit commitment intuitively go the extra mile to accommodate a patient, family member, colleague, healthcare partner, or community by putting others’ needs above their own.

They are reliable, trustworthy, punctual, and responsible professionals who come to work each day inspired by a selfless sense of duty. Always accountable for their actions, they put their best foot forward to ensure each patient and family feels like a top priority.

“Commitment means doing what you say you’re going to do when you say you’re going to do it,” says Raynell Aponte, an executive assistant with VITAS in Florida’s Treasure Coast region. “If you tell a patient or family that you’re going to call back, if you tell a patient or family that you’re going to be there at a certain time or on a certain day—be there when you say you’re going to be there. You commit to that and follow through with that.”

VITAS employees who exemplify commitment always do the right thing for the right reasons, and no matter what happens, they treat everyone with respect.

“It doesn’t matter whether the family is going through a really tough time or is angry at the time, I’m committed to seeing them through the whole process,” says Tania Bricher, an inpatient hospice nurse for VITAS in Broward County, Florida. “...To be by their side caring for them—just loving them—for me, that’s rewarding.”
