The Life of a Hospice Physician
Hospice physicians have the flexibility to spend as much time with each patient as they need. Dr. Steven Kanner, a VITAS hospice physician, might see seven to 10 patients on a typical day. He generally has about 60 patients under his care and visits patients on a monthly basis unless they are on continuous care, in which case he sees them more often. “My job is to make the end of someone’s life comfortable, both spiritually and physically,” he says. “Death is a process everybody on earth has to go through. Everyone deserves to die well. My job is to make sure that happens.”
Dr. Joseph Shega’s career is built on expertise in geriatrics, palliative medicine, and hospice care. “Reflect on your reasons for choosing medicine,” he advises, “and then take the paths that take you there or return you to your roots.”
