Medical Director - Houston
Alfred Hernandez is a Medical Director for VITAS Healthcare, the nation’s leading provider of end-of-life care. Dr. Hernandez oversees the medical care and treatment of VITAS patients in their homes, nursing homes, assisted living communities and personal care homes in Houston, Texas. He also consults with patients’ attending physicians, supervises VITAS team physicians, guides staff and volunteers, and serves as a resource to practicing physicians and other healthcare professionals on the benefits of hospice and palliative care for patients and their families.
Prior to joining VITAS in 2010, Dr. Hernandez served for nine years as Medical Director and Team Physician for another Houston-based hospice. Dr. Hernandez has been in private practice in gastroenterology in Houston since 1976.
Board certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine, Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, Dr. Hernandez received a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Texas in Austin and a Medical Degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He completed an internship at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Oakland, California, and a residency and a fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and MD Anderson Hospital in Houston. A Vietnam veteran, Dr. Hernandez served for seven years in the U.S. Naval Reserve, attaining the rank of Commander.
