Medical Director - Collier County
Rebecca Smith is a Medical Director for VITAS Healthcare, the nation’s leading provider of end-of-life care. She is responsible for overseeing the medical care and treatment of VITAS patients in their homes, nursing homes and assisted living facilities in Collier, Florida. She also consults with patients’ attending physicians, supervises VITAS team physicians, guides staff and volunteers, and serves as a resource to practicing physicians and other healthcare professionals on the benefits of hospice and palliative care for patients and their families.
Dr. Smith joined VITAS in 2016. Prior to joining, Dr. Smith served as Staff Physiatrist for Naples Community Hospital and the Brookdale Center for Healthy Aging and Rehabilitation, as well as, supervising physician for the Palliative Care Service in Naples, Florida. Earlier in her career, Dr. Smith worked for the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania as Director of Cancer Rehabilitation. She currently serves as a Visiting Professor in the Department of Clinical Skills and Department of Bioethics at St. George’s University School of Medicine.
Dr. Smith earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and a Master’s Degree in Physiology from The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania. She then earned her Medical Degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies. She commenced her internship in Internal Medicine and residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Louisiana State University Medical Center, New Orleans, completing her work at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia. She completed a fellowship-training program in Pain Management in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) at Harvard Medical School, Boston. A diplomat of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation she is Board Certified in PM&R, as well as, subspecialty board certifications in Hospice and Palliative Care and Pain Management. Dr. Smith is a member of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Care Medicine, Florida Medical Association and the Collier County Medical Society.
