What's it Like to be a Hospice Nurse?

Being a hospice nurse for VITAS Healthcare is patient-focused nursing. It requires superior clinical and people skills. VITAS nurse Erika Avila shares: “I knew I didn't want to be in the hospital setting or in the doctor's office. I wanted that one-on-one time, that personal time with the patient, when I can actually listen to their needs, address their needs, educate them. It’s a more personal level. To me, that's what nursing is about."

Social workers make connections. Whether it’s helping patients and families with medical paperwork and sensitive healthcare decisions, providing community resources or offering emotional support, hospice social workers make a real difference in the lives of others. VITAS social worker Judy Weisenfeld shares: "I see my role as the person who guides the patient and family through the end-of-life process. I provide a calming presence to the patient and the family.”
