Medical Director, Fultondale
Virginia Campbell is a Medical Director for VITAS Healthcare, the nation’s leading provider of end-of-life care. She is responsible for overseeing the medical care and treatment of VITAS patients in their homes, nursing homes and assisted living facilities in Fultondale, Alabama. She also consults with patients’ attending physicians, supervises VITAS team physicians, guides staff and volunteers, and serves as a resource to practicing physicians and other healthcare professionals on the benefits of hospice and palliative care for patients and their families.
Dr. Campbell joined VITAS in 2016 as Inpatient Physician. Before completing a Fellowship in Palliative Medicine at the University of Alabama, Birmingham School of Medicine, Dr. Campbell trained in Family Medicine and spent most of her clinical career as an Emergency Physician in rural Alabama. She currently serves as a Palliative Medicine Physician at the VA Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama and is the host and producer of the highly regarded “Brain Science Podcast,” which will celebrate its tenth anniversary this year.
Dr. Campbell earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Alabama, Huntsville, a Master’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Alabama, Birmingham and she earned a Medical Degree from the University of Alabama, School of Medicine. Dr. Campbell completed an internship at Lloyd Noland Hospital and residency in Family Medicine at Carraway Methodist Medical Center. A Diplomat of the American Board of Family practice, she is a member of the National Association of Science Writers and the International Association for the study of Pain.
