VITAS Celebrates Jewish American Heritage Month 2018

05/01/2018

Jewish American Heritage Month

With May marking Jewish American Heritage Month 2018, we applaud the memorable and diverse contributions Jewish Americans have made to the world of music, like the talented George Gershwin and Lou Reed. A commemorative observation that’s only been on the calendar for 12 years, Jewish American Heritage Month was originally proposed by the Jewish Museum of Florida and by South Florida Jewish community leaders, and was proclaimed by President George W. Bush on April 20, 2006.

VITAS’ certified Jewish hospice programs train staff and volunteers in these beliefs and customs, along with Jewish ethics related to medical futility and the care of the terminally ill. With the support of staff specially trained in Jewish culture and traditions, VITAS patients and families representing all faith traditions within the Jewish community can face death or the loss of a loved one knowing their faith, tradition and values are understood and respected.

VITAS® Healthcare is proud of the strong ties we’ve established in the Jewish community, to include the fact that many of our hospice locations nationwide have earned accreditation from the National Institute for Jewish Hospice.
