The patient’s name was George, and physically
he was doing very poorly. He had no family and very little money. If not
for the hospice team, he would have spent almost all of his time by himself.
One day, his social worker happened to visit
when George was home listening to the radio. They were talking when a
song by Tina Turner happened to come on. She had a concert tour coming
up in Cincinnati, and the station was playing her music to help publicize
it.
George smiled the song, and suddenly remarked
how much he enjoyed Tina Turner’s music. He’d gone to see
her once long ago, when he was younger. He thought she was great, he said.
The social worker didn’t waste a lot of
time. She went out and bought two tickets for herself and her patient
to see the concert. She arranged everything - picked him up, took him
there, made it a real night out. But she also called the concert organizers
beforehand, to tell them that a dying patient would be in the audience
that night, and that one of his last wishes was to see the show.
That night, in the middle of the concert, Tina
Turner came downstage, picked him out of the crowd, and announced, “This
one’s for you, George.”
George never stopped talking about it till the
day he died.
