Peggy Pettit, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer

VITAS caregivers often are called “hospice heroes” for the daily sacrifices they make for our patients and their families. So when they risk their lives and put their own families second just to get the job done, what can we call them?

Advocates? Champions? Believers!

Despite wind-driven wildfires that raged through Southern California in late 2003—claiming lives and property in Encino, San Bernardino, Orange County and San Diego—VITAS staff found ways
to access and care for hospice patients and families. “Our belief in the VITAS mission and values is what inspired us to keep our heads up and to remain focused on our priority—patients and families,” said Rita Peddycoart, San Fernando’s Patient Care Administrator, who managed to continue working full-time after she and her family were evacuated from their home in the San Fernando Valley.

Many staff members worked day and night to remain in constant contact with their patients and to continue meeting their needs. Some employees set up operations from community shelters, others from the homes of relatives and friends.

“Amazingly, staff members navigated road closures and spent countless hours on the phone with patients. We’re all dedicated to our patients and to one another,” said Susie Fishenfeld, San Fernando General Manager, whose program was significantly affected by the fires.

As the fires multiplied and spread, five employees eventually lost their homes. In their traditional spirit of goodwill, VITAS staff members donated money, clothing and food to help these employees.

“I am so grateful for my co-workers who have gone out of their way to take care of me,” said Terri Brodie, Team Manager for the VITAS Inland Empire program, whose house was damaged inside and out by fire.
