Chicagoland South earns 3rd highest level in
"We Honor Veterans" program

Displaying the red-white-and-blue, three-starred “V” is an honor bestowed on only the most active and committed of the nationwide organizations that serve and work with veterans near the end of life. VITAS’ Chicagoland South program is proud to be one of those programs.

“Congratulations on achieving We Honor Veterans partner level 3!,” wrote Emil Zuberbueler, director of the National Veterans Program, National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO), sponsor of the program. “Your activity report reflects your organization’s commitment to ensuring veterans have access to quality end-of-life care. All of us at NHPCO appreciate your ongoing efforts and dedication.”

For years, VITAS Innovative Hospice Care® of Chicagoland South has worked daily to honor veterans’ preferences for care at the end of life and to provide them with respect, comfort and compassion. VITAS provides staff and volunteers with specialized training on the unique needs of veterans and how their military experience may affect their end-of-life journey.

The “We Honor Veterans” campaign provides recognition to organizations that demonstrate a systematic commitment to improving care for veterans. By recognizing the unique needs of our nation’s veterans who are facing a life-limiting illness, VITAS is able to accompany and guide veterans and their families toward a more peaceful ending. And in cases where there might be some specific needs related to the veteran’s  military service, combat experience or other traumatic events, VITAS finds tools to help support those for whom they are caring.

There is a partner level 4 that has yet to be achieved by any organization in the country. But as Chicagoland South expands both its services and the numbers of veterans it reaches, achieving those 4 stars is a distinct possibility.

Our Veteran Liaison in Chicagoland South, Pamela Durak, has inspired all of us to make this happen. Contact Pamela at 708.781.4400 or via email at pamela.durak@vitas.com.

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 181 takes on a US battalion in Afghanistan

Dawn Mays, VITAS hospice aide in Chicagoland South, was just doing what she does best: caring for her patients in an assisted living community. She would tell them about her son, Sgt. Matt Mays of the 75th Ranger Regiment 1st Battalion, who was serving in Afghanistan. A friend of one of Dawn’s patients, who was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion, loved hearing about Matt.

Imagine Dawn’s surprise when, after the patient had passed, the friend called Dawn to say that the Ladies Auxiliary had something they wanted to send to her son. That little something was almost 75 pounds of treats and comfort items.

Since then, the Ladies Auxiliary has continued to collect and send these care packages to Sgt. Mays. Matt, who is now on his fourth deployment, shares the packages with his battalion and says everyone looks forward to them.

Thank you to the families and friends who support Sgt. Mays and his battalion.
