Timothy S. O’Toole is Chief Executive Officer of VITAS Innovative Hospice Care®, the nation’s leading hospice provider, a subsidiary of Chemed Corporation (NYSE: CHE). Tim also serves as an Executive Vice President of Chemed.
Since assuming day-to-day leadership at VITAS, Tim has led the company through an unprecedented period of growth—both in terms of patients under care as well as areas served. Under his direction, VITAS has acquired two respected hospice providers; obtained certificates of need in Washington, DC, and Florida; expanded operations to six new states; launched its first consumer-directed advertising campaigns; implemented an innovative employment recruitment and retention campaign; and continued to build its proprietary information technology platform.
Named to his current position at VITAS when Chemed acquired the company in February 2004, Tim had served since 1991 as Chemed’s representative on the VITAS Board of Directors. During Tim’s tenure on the VITAS Board, the company expanded significantly through growth of existing hospice programs as well as through strategic acquisitions.
Tim’s healthcare experience also includes eight years as chairman and chief executive officer of Patient Care, Inc., Chemed’s former home health services subsidiary. Under Tim’s leadership, Patient Care grew—through steady expansion and acquisitions—from a respected regional home health company to a $140 million provider with operations in the Northwest, South and Midwest. Tim also served for eight years as a director of Omnicare, Inc. (NYSE: OCR), the nation’s leading provider of professional pharmacy and related consulting services for long term care institutions.
Tim joined Chemed in 1978 as a tax accountant for Chemed’s former DuBois Chemicals subsidiary, moving to Chemed in 1979 in the same position. He was promoted to tax specialist in 1980, senior tax specialist in 1983 and tax supervisor in 1984. In 1985 he became corporate tax manager and in 1986 he was promoted to assistant controller and director of taxes.
The Board of Directors elected Tim a vice president of Chemed in 1988; he continued as director of taxes. In 1989 the Board named him vice president and treasurer of Chemed. In 1992 he was named an executive vice president of Chemed while retaining his title of treasurer. In 1995 Tim gained additional responsibility as chairman and chief executive officer of Patient Care, Inc., which Chemed acquired in 1994 and divested in 2002.
Tim holds a BS degree in accounting from the University of Kentucky and a JD degree, cum laude, from the Salmon P. Chase Law School of Northern Kentucky University.
