VITAS Hospice Newsroom
VITAS Innovative Hospice Care
has logged some impressive statistics in its history. You might be interested to know:
VITAS provided 5,249,820 days of care in 2013.
VITAS provided almost $10.2 million in genuine charity care to hospice patients nationwide in 2013 . This represents an average of 1 percent of our gross revenues—a ratio that few, if any, hospice providers can match.
VITAS currently fields 289 patient care teams across the country.
As part of our patient care teams, VITAS employs 2,500 hospice aides, 4,310 registered nurses and licensed practical nurses/licensed vocational nurses, 343 social workers, 329 chaplains and 417 physicians.
The 4,011 VITAS volunteers contributed 379,180 hours during 2013.
VITAS currently has contractual agreements with 2,744 skilled nursing facilities throughout the nation.
VITAS currently has 37 inpatient hospice units that allow visitors 24 hours per day, with provisions for loved ones to stay overnight, and with little or no limits on visitation by children and family pets.
More than 1,416 VITAS employees have 10 or more years of experience with the company.
The authoritative hospice text originally published in 2002, End of Life Care: A Practical Guide, was compiled by VITAS Chief Medical Officer Barry M. Kinzbrunner, MD, FACP, FAAHPM, with contributions by 19 VITAS clinicians—from physicians to chaplains, and every hospice discipline in between.
VITAS clinicians have authored more than 60 WINKs (What I Need to Know) to help family members better care for their loved one who has been admitted to one of our hospice programs.
VITAS was—and is—the first hospice accredited nationally to provide Clinical Pastoral Education training.
VITAS HME Solutions—staffed with end-of-life specialists to provide home medical equipment to all VITAS patients in the markets where HME Solutions currently operates—has grown in just a few years to become one of the largest such suppliers in the country.
VITAS is the only hospice whose founders have been presented with both the prestigious Founders Award and the
Healthcare Architects Award from the National Hospice Foundation and its sponsoring organization, the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization.
VITAS was the first recipient of the Caring Partners Award from the Foundation for Hospices in Sub-Saharan Africa.
VITAS has won the Trailblazer Health Award presented by the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition in recognition of VITAS’ ongoing efforts to expand awareness of and access to hospice services for African Americans.
VITAS is a Founding Benefactor of the Duke Institute on Care at the End of Life, the nation’s first comprehensive institute for the advancement of research, education and caregiving for those near death.
Like every hospice whose founding predates passage of the Medicare Hospice Benefit, VITAS began more than 35 years ago as an all-volunteer, non-profit organization.
While VITAS today enjoys the benefits of hospice’s most advanced information management system (Vx), our first patient records were recorded by hand on 3x5 cards.
