HOW TO BECOME A VOLUNTEER

VITAS Volunteers make a difference every day…
Helping those at the end of life and their families
is a simple assignment for these special volunteers.
Compassion comes naturally to them.
The gift they give is their time as part of our hospice team effort.

VITAS VOLUNTEERS ENJOY MANY REWARDS
As a VITAS volunteer, you will make a difference in another person’s life.

You will feel a sense of accomplishment from improving the quality of life for someone at the end of life.

You will establish meaningful friendships with patients, their families and our hospice team.

Students find many opportunities to gain valuable experience while meeting their school’s requirements.

‘‘After I retired, I really missed the bustle and camaraderie of the working world. I found my niche when I starting volunteering at the VITAS office. I’ve made many friends, and I feel like my administrative support is really useful.’’

VITAS VOLUNTEER IN SAN DIEGO

VOLUNTEERS HELP PATIENTS AND FAMILIES BY:
• Listening as a patient shares memories, feelings, fears
• Filling in to give a family caregiver a short, needed break
• Making supportive calls and visits to bereaved family members and friends
• Telephoning patients and families to offer reassurance and comfort
• Providing administrative support in the VITAS office
• Running errands, performing light housekeeping chores
• Visiting lonely patients in nursing homes
• Reading, playing games, listening to music
• Taking a patient on an outing…a simple walk in the park
Share your time and skills
when it matters most...
at the end of life.

THE FIRST STEP:
To become a VITAS volunteer, please contact your local Volunteer Manager.

To find the VITAS office nearest you :

The only requirement is a caring heart and a desire to make a difference. VITAS volunteers are as diverse as the patients and families we serve—covering all ages, nationalities, ethnic backgrounds and lifestyles. Some volunteers are retired; others are working professionals or students.

We have specialty volunteers who provide massage, play music and bring their pets to visit. We even have volunteer roles for t hose who are homebound.

All VITAS volunteers receive comprehensive training that includes hospice philosophy, caring for the terminally ill, and grief and loss education. We then match your talents and interests with the broad spectrum of available volunteer roles.

‘‘I am so proud of our volunteers.
They’re willing to give their precious
time without expecting anything
in return. They are an essential part
of the hospice team.’’
